When you start to examine the story of The Civilization Loop, you will most likely ask yourself one thing:  What is the significance of 5 May 2012?  Everybody who is anybody is specifically pointing to December 21, 2012 as the "End-Time" or "Enlightenment" date.  That is a very good question to be asking, because in all honesty it was a complete goof on my part.

You see, while writing the story, I wanted to poke a little fun at those men and women who for ages past have tried to predict future events.  How many of you have ever heard of the book 5/5/2000 by Richard W. Noone?  Probably a few of you, back before 2000, but not much since.  He wrote this book to catalog a vicious "polar shift" that would occur on 5 May 2000.  Essentially Los Angeles would become the South Pole, the poles would melt and chaos would ensue.  It never happened, for obvious reasons.  There may in fact be a lot of cold, frigid people in Los Angeles these days, but not because of the climate.

The prophesier of prophesiers, Nostradamus, supposedly predicted a horrifying earthquake in May, 1988.  Again, Los Angeles was picked on to represent the city of damnation.  Again, NOTHING HAPPENED.  Many others have tried different approaches to predicting some cataclysmic event in May, but other than Cinco De Mayo, nothing much has happened.

Since so many have tried to accurately predict something in the month of May in some year, with no success whatsoever to this point, I thought it appropriate, in a bit of satirical commentary, to make the "End-Time" date of my book occur on May 5, 2012.  It was only after the fact that I found out while researching the Mayan Calendar that the Mayans suggested December 21, 2012.  OOPS!  So instead of revising and changing a date mentioned about 100,000 times in the story, I chose to have December 21 represent a change in mindset, enlightenment, a reason for the time travelers to make sure the paradox event never occurred.  Smooth, I'd say!  Like a baby's bottom!  Ha!

Now, that having been said, there are some pretty interesting things that apply to May 5, 2012.  These are all purely coincidental and I came to these realizations AFTER having chosen May 5 as the date.  On the Mayan Calendar, May 5 is represented by the symbol Oc.  Oc is a "gateway" or "dog" for the Mayans, representing loyalty, faith and unconditional love.  But this also is represented by a God in human form that holds the mystery of times secrets.  Accordingly, Oc also stands for "...the foot that marks the very beginning, and end, of time."  I am not making that up!  Go to the links below to see for yourself.  Also, stumbling more into the bizarre, May 5 falls on a Saturday (the true end of the 7 day period when God created the Heavens and the Earth and rested), which happens to be the Samaritan Passover (May 4-6 2012; check the May 5, 2012 link above).  Also, Oc are the first two letters in the name of October, a central character in the story and in the prequel/parallel story that will follow entitled Beyond the Loop.  Have you gotten chills yet?  What is more appropriate than to have a rogue time traveler assure that the world will end on a date that, even to the Mayans, represents both the beginning and end of time itself?  Remember, it's fiction, right?

Well, I'm sure by now everyone has heard some prophecy about the year 2012.  I've seen on television, about a special that is entitled Nostradamus: 2012.  That is slated for January 4, 2009.  It's just one show on the History Channel's Armageddon Week, check it out!  But no matter how cynical you have become about the year 2012, Roland Emmerich (Stargate, Independence Day, Day After Tomorrow, Patriot) will offer you a moment of pause, somewhere around June 2009, with his epic, apocalyptic film 2012.

In addition to Roland Emmerich's 2012 film in 2009, Michael Bay (The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Island, Transformers, Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen (2009)) will also be making his own 2012 film entitled 2012:  War for Souls, slated for Summer 2010 and based on the Whitley Strieber novel. 

With the bevy of 2012 sites on the web and peoples engrained, morbid curiosity with facing the end of the world, I'm sure these won't be the ONLY 2012 films before the year arrives.  Look for many more to come before December 21, 2012 is upon us.  Maybe if we're lucky, one of them will be The Civilization Loop.  Keep your fingers crossed there!
